What is a cover letter?
A cover letter usually accompanies your CV and/or application form and acts as an introduction of who you are and why you wish to apply for the role.
They are a formality, and as such, can simply be ‘short and sweet’ – leave the detail for your CV and application form.
So, what should you include in a cover letter? Use these top tips and get typing:
- Find out who to address the letter to – avoid ‘Sir/Madam/Whoever it may concern’ where possible as it can seem impersonal and lazy.
- Include your name, address and date as you would in any other letter, and keep the structure like a ‘classic’ letter.
- Keep it to one page in length – everything you need to say can fit on one side.
- Your cover letter may be the first thing the interviewer or employer reads – even before your CV, so it’s vital to make a positive impression. How do you do this? Inject some personality, state your key skills or experience (maximum three points) and state clearly why you fit the requirements of the role.
- Include pleasant statements that articulate the purpose of the letter, for example, ‘Please find enclosed my CV in application for the role of…’; ‘Thank you for taking the time to consider my application, and I look forward to hearing from you in the near future.’
