How to find out if you are eligible for funding support

Funding for the programme

In the UK, the government contributes to the costs of training and assessing apprentices in the pursuit of developing vocational skills. Their aim is to create a skilled workforce, therefore up to 100% funding could be available to help support the delivery of an Apprenticeship to achieve this.

No matter the size of your company, if you have a wage bill under £3 million a year we may be able to provide government funding to support the delivery of an apprenticeship programme. Apprenticeship training can be fully or partially funded depending on the age of the Apprentice – we’ll always advise on the amount of funding available before the training starts.  An apprentice could be a new recruit if you are looking to expand your team or could even be an existing employee who is looking to progress.

The way Apprenticeships are funded changed in April 2017. The government introduced an additional tax known as the Apprenticeship Levy that affects businesses with a wage bill of £3 million or more to help fund Apprenticeships.

Candidate eligibility

You can upskill existing staff or hire a new member as an apprentice, given they meet the following criteria:

  • Aged 16 or over
  • Not educated to foundation degree level or above
  • Employed (or soon to be employed) 30 hours or more per week with a contract of employment
  • A citizen of the EU with the right to work in the UK
  •  Not completed a qualification at a higher stage than the apprenticeship level, or in the same sector

Apprenticeship grants

Apprenticeship Grants for Employers (AGE grants) of £1,500 are available to businesses who take on an apprentice aged 16-24.

The AGE 16 to 24 grant for employers aims to support businesses, who would not otherwise be in a position to recruit individuals aged 16 to 24 into employment through the apprenticeship programme.

You could be eligible for this if:

  • You haven’t employed an apprentice in the past year
  • Your apprentice is aged 16 to 24
  • You have fewer than 50 employees

You can claim support for up to 5 apprentices.

For more information please take a look at the AGE grant fact sheet.
