The retail industry is varied, with roles ranging from car sales to visual merchandising. Careers in this constantly evolving industry encompass a range of skills, including customer service, management and technology. 
Retailer
Level: 2

Duration: Minimum 12 months

Qualification type: Apprenticeship standard

Entry requirements:

There are no formal qualifications required to start this apprenticeship, but you will be assessed to ensure you have the ability to complete the English and maths qualification to at least Level 1.

What to expect

As a Retailer your main responsibilities would be to assist customers when they purchase products and services. If you enjoy direct contact with a wide range of people, are motivated by targets and are passionate about delivering a quality service, then career in retail is perfect for you. You might work in an establishment such as small boutiques, large high street chains, supermarkets and well-known department stores or maybe more specialist retailers which include funeral services, garden centres, delicatessens and people who work in remote environments, for example, in telephone, on-line and mail order retail.

As apprenticeships are all about learning on the job, you’ll spend most of your time working with your employer and learning as you go. You will also be required to complete some off the job training which may include in house training, research and portfolio building.

Assessment

You will be assessed by your trainer who will visit you in the workplace to assess and observe you at work, reviewing your progress and ensuring you are on target to get your qualification. You will also have access to the remote support of an e-portfolio where your trainer might set you tasks to complete. Towards the end of your apprenticeship you will complete an End-point Assessment. This is the final assessment to ensure that you meet the industry standard for the job you have been training for and can include: tests, a project, employer references and/or an interview.

Progression

This apprenticeship provides an ideal stepping stone into specialist, team leading, supervisory or first line management roles within retail and higher level training and apprenticeships.

 

Retail Team Leader
Level: 3

Duration: Minimum 12 months

Qualification type: Apprenticeship standard

Entry requirements:

Five GCSEs at grade 4/C and above or a Level 2 qualification. You will need to be in relevant employment, but we can support you to find this.

What to expect

As a Retail team leader your main responsibility will be to support your managers to deliver exceptional customer service and a positive experience to customers. You may have to deputise for managers in their absence to guide and coordinate the work of the team to complete tasks and maintain business standards. As apprenticeships are all about learning on the job, you’ll spend most of your time working with your employer and learning as you go. You will also be required to complete some off the job training which may include in house training, research and portfolio building.

Retail Manager
Level: 4

Duration: Minimum 12 months

Qualification type: Apprenticeship standard

Entry requirements:

It is expected that the individual would have worked within a supervisory role to start on this apprenticeship standard. Apprentices will be required to have or to achieve Level 2 English and maths tests prior to completion of their apprenticeship. You will need to be in relevant employment, but we can support you to find this.

What to expect

As a Retail Manager your main responsibility is to deliver on sales targets and a ensure customers have a positive experience that will encourage repeat custom and loyalty to the brand / business. If you enjoy working with a wide range of people, have excellent communication skills and a sound understanding of business and people management with a passion for leading and developing a team, then a career as a Retail Manager could be for you. As apprenticeships are all about learning on the job, you’ll spend most of your time working with your employer and learning as you go. You will also be required to complete some off the job training which may include in house training, research and portfolio building.
